April Fool’s Day

The History

No one knows the exact origins of April Fool’s Day.

Some people point to The Nun's Priest's Tale from Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” where a fox tricks a rooster. Other scholars trace the day back to the Hilaria festival on March 25 when Romans pranked each other and dressed up for festivals in costumes and disguises.

Regardless of how it started, people have been using the day as an excuse to trick, prank, and otherwise fool others for a long, long time now.

How To Celebrate

Businesses can use social media to engage their audience by sharing fake product launches and humorous videos.

If trickery feels a little too off-brand for your organization, you can still offer real promotions or sales with a playful twist to attract customers' attention and generate excitement without misleading them.

By embracing the spirit of April Fool's Day in a thoughtful and creative manner, businesses can connect with customers in a fun and engaging way.

National Self-Care Day

The History

National Self-Care Day, observed on April 5 every year in the U.S., was established by Chicago-based development coach Laura Schwartz in October 2020.

This day serves as a reminder for individuals to prioritize their well-being. It encourages individuals to take a break and focus on activities that bring joy and reduce stress.

How To Celebrate

To celebrate, businesses can organize events for their employees like talks, workshops, or classes focused on self-care activities. Share helpful tips and advice to educate your team on self-care practices and encourage positive lifestyle changes.

If you have benefits that include services like counseling, this is a great day to remind employees those options are available.

You can go a step further and provide some time off on this day for employees to take care of their mental health and well-being. Some businesses even provide corporate gifts that employees can redeem for yoga classes, massages, a spa treatment, or other ways to relax.

Customer Appreciation Day

The History

There’s not much of a paper trail for how Customer Appreciation Day got started, but it’s easy to see why the holiday gained momentum. After all, without customers you have a hobby, not a business.

Though you should treat every day like it’s Customer Appreciation Day, this is a great opportunity to pull out some extra flourishes that show your fans why they matter so much.

How To Celebrate

Take the time to send handwritten thank-you notes to customers, reflecting a personal touch and appreciation for their support. Or, scale those thank yous with personalized, digital thank you cards.

Take it a step further and send customers surprise packages with goodies or samples of new products to excite them and strengthen their loyalty. You might also offer special promotions redeemable only during Customer Appreciation Day to reward and incentivize customer loyalty.

You can even stretch the day into a whole week by highlighting a different customer each day, showcasing customers who have interesting stories, have been loyal the longest, make the most purchases, or even just select customers at random.

Earth Day

The History

In many ways, Earth Day marks the start of popular support for the environmental movement. The groundswell of support for this holiday led to rallies across the country. In response, the federal government instituted the Environmental Protection Agency.

Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and student activist Denis Hayes launched the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

Earth Day has been instrumental in promoting environmental awareness and action, leading to significant legislative changes such as the Clean Air and Clean Water acts.

By the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, more than 200 million people globally participated in celebrations. The event has grown significantly over the years, with more than a billion people now participating annually in Earth Day actions coordinated globally by Earthday.org.

The official theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics," and 2025 will mark the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.

How To Celebrate

Businesses often use Earth Day as an opportunity to promote their environmental and sustainability initiatives. Consider posting about your progress on past plans, as well as your future goals on social media, in your newsletter, and on your website.

It’s also a good idea to get your hands dirty. Host a tree-planting event or a community clean-up to engage employees in environmental conservation efforts. This is also a good time to support local green initiatives or environmental organizations through partnerships or donations.

Administrative Professionals Day

The History

The history of Administrative Professionals Day dates back to World War II when there was a shortage of skilled administrative personnel

In 1942, the National Secretaries Association was established to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel and attract workers to the field. That group hosted the first Administrative Professionals Day.

Today, Administrative Professionals Day is observed annually on the Wednesday of the last full week of April and serves as a time to recognize and celebrate the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, executive assistants, personal assistants, receptionists, client services representatives, and other administrative support professionals. It is a day dedicated to showing appreciation for the essential role these professionals play in maintaining office efficiency and supporting day-to-day operations.

How To Celebrate

Businesses can celebrate the hard work and dedication of administrative support professionals with digital gift cards, flowers, and handwritten notes.

Gather the whole office and treat the administrative professionals to a catered lunch. This gives everybody time to express their thanks for admins.

You can also demonstrate your appreciation to those outside the office. Consider recognizing administrative professionals publicly through blog posts, social media shout-outs, or personalized videos.

The History

Writer, editor, and UC-Davis Professor Samantha Schoech launched Independent Bookstore Day in 2014 to celebrate and support independent bookstores across the United States.

Today, more than 1,000 bookstores across the country celebrate the holiday with exclusive books, author signings, contests, food, music, deals, discounts, and more.

How To Celebrate

Consider organizing literary events or book-related activities at the office, or through online videoconferences. Some ideas to celebrate include having authors come talk about their books, asking poets to read some of their work, or holding a book club hour for employees.

Give employees an opportunity to support their favorite local bookstore with a digital gift card like Giftly they can redeem anywhere.

National Small Business Week

The History

President John F. Kennedy first pronounced National Small Business Week in 1963. In the half century since then, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has used National Small Business Week to acknowledge the country's entrepreneurs and small business owners and celebrate their contributions.

The SBA uses awards like the National Small Business Person of the Year, Phoenix Awards, Lender of the Year, Entrepreneurial Development Awards, and more to honor various small business owners for their achievements.

During National Small Business Week, prominent entrepreneurs hold workshops, mentoring sessions, and events in cities across the country.

How To Celebrate

Use this week to share your business journey, successes, and challenges with your customers through email campaigns and social media. Encourage engagement with hashtags like #SmallBusinessWeek and #SmallBizSuccess, or by offering special discounts or coupons.

Consider partnering with other small businesses in your area. By collaborating, you can reach a larger audience and potentially attract new customers. Look for businesses that complement yours to maximize the impact.

Take the time to thank your staff, customers, mentors, and supporters who contribute to your business's success. Consider sending thank you cards, gift cards, emails, or posting messages on social media. You can even create a short thank you video.

Make the most of all the free marketing webinars and other educational events held during Small Business Week to enhance your skills and knowledge in areas like email marketing, social media marketing, and more.
